The Shura is also considering a draft law to grant Saudi citizenship to foreign husbands of Saudi women if they meet specific terms

Terms: Gotta be Muslim?

Terms: Gotta be Muslim?

Heh, I'm 150% sure that's one of them.

Under the law, the marriage must be in line with Islamic rules and the couple must be free of any serious diseases, should not be drug addicts and the age gap between them must not exceed 25 years.

Hmm, the link to the full article was acting up. I changed it and it seems to be working now.

Lebanon is so liberal that they'll allow anyone to marry anyone--but you have to be the same religion, since there's no secular marriage available, so one of you needs to convert. They don't care which one, but you have to match.

That's interesting—I didn't know that. Thanks.

Oh, wow - I actually agree with the Saudi government! (Do I need to go shoot myself, now??)

LOL, well, I have to admit I also agree with them on that part, so don't shoot yourself yet.

Saudi's are our friends?

And, actually, I don't agree with the 25 year age gap thing. I don't think government should be involved in who marries whom.

This may be aimed at stopping Child Brides. Although 25 year difference is still too far a gap for that. It's not a problem exclusive to Islamic countries. It's done in India, too and elsewhere. I did a page about it here.

I'd like to get all excited about this, but mixed marriage is either someone outside a religion or ethnicity. The Saudis are only saying you can marry someone who isn't Saudi, but they still have to be Arab and most likely Muslim. But the article doesn't say.

And yes, CL, meanwhile the women are screaming to drive and they haven't budged. That would be something for sure.

re: #10 marjoriemoon

Scratch that. It doesn't stop child marriage or attempt to. It only says that an old coot can't marry a little girl, but a 30 yr old still can :(

Well, I just got a kick out of the use of the term "spinster".

But, but, what about all those American/European women who marry Saudi men and then they move with their kids to KSA and the Saudi husband keeps their passports and won't let the American/European wife leave the country?

What about them?

Pam says there are thousands of them!

A baby step forward is better than the status quo.

Well, if pressed I'm sure I could think of a more accurate word to describe our ongoing relationship with a country whose repressive laws are in direct contrast to our own jealously guarded freedoms, whose women have zero political empowerment (PDF), whose hard-line religious zealots are still tolerated & their ideology exported, and 15 of whose citizens were responsible for the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history, but I'd really rather not.

I'm thinking Doug Hutchison. At least Smith was an adult at the time!
